The varsity volleyball team celebrated their senior night in style with a sweep of Minerva. The girls held their ground and dominated the entire three set game with telling victories in all three sets. The highest difference among the sets was 12 points (set 1) - very obviously showing the relentless nature that the girls went into this game with.
Notable performances came from Junior Maggie Fellers (11 kills, 1 ace, and 1 block), and Senior Kirsten Bogunovich (6 kills, 5 aces, and 1 block).
The team saw the most difficulty handling Minerva in the first set, but still took the win with ease. The second set was particularly noteworthy for ending in a staggering 25-4 win for the Marlington. Minerva attempted to bounce back in set three, but were set down in a 25-11 loss, solidifying the sweep for the Dukes. Judging by the weight of these scores, the girls saw no reason to let up their intensity throughout the entire game.
Kirsten Bogunovich was able to share her senior perspective on this special night.
“It kind of felt unreal that it was senior night, I’ve been playing with these girls since June and they’re all like family to me.”
Bogunovich also had some words on what the game itself meant to her: “Winning of course felt amazing, but more importantly I think that the feeling of playing with a team who always has each other’s backs is truly remarkable.”
The companionship from the three seniors on the team (Bogunovich, Nichol Ellesin, and Sydney Tortola) surly will be passed down onto the underclassmen to keep the recent successes of MHS Volleyball alive for years to come. The team has seen nothing but success for the last few years, and it is thanks in large part to the leadership and commitment that the girls are taught throughout their time playing.
The team hopes to keep their winning ways up going into the playoffs, and they certainly have a chip on their shoulder after this senior night victory.
