Marlington Defeats Canton South to Win Their First Championship

On Saturday, February 15th, the Marlington Dukes Freshman basketball team took on the Canton South Wildcats; succeeding in a 34-30 win. The game was held at the Salem High School gymnasium.
The Dukes took the lead in the first quarter and never gave it up. By the end of the first quarter, it was 8-7; leading into the second quarter with an 8-3 lead, third quarter 13-9, and finishing the fourth quarter 11-5.
Throughout the entire game, the Dukes expressed great team effort and everyone played with a solid defense.
Individual scoring for the Dukes include Drew Dunham with a total of 10 points (including 3 three-point baskets), Max Heavner with 3 points (1 three-point basket), Cohen Boyce with 1 point, Casey Miller with 2 points, Riley McFarland with 2 points, and Tommy Skelding with 16 points (1 three-point basket).
The team finished their season 16-4 overall, as well as earning the title of 12-0 undefeated Eastern Buckeye Conference League Champions.
To conclude the 2019-2020 winter season, coach Mark Griggs makes an ending statement: “I could not be any prouder of this group of young men. They showed tremendous poise throughout the year. They competed hard on each and every possession. They held themselves and each other to high standards. I look forward to watching these young men grow as basketball players, but most importantly as people in the next few years.”
