This past Tuesday, the MHS varsity girls golf team capped off their absolutely stellar season by defeating Perry at The Legends Golf Course in Massillon. The girls took the victory by a score of 177 to 187, solidifying their undefeated season at 10-0 in the EBC, and 12-0 overall - an unprecedented mark for any team this year at the high school as of this writing.
The match consisted of numerous dominant performances from the team, most notably near the top of their roster. Their #1, Erica Headley, shot a team-leading 37 - a score that ties the record for the lowest single round by any player in the EBC thus far this year. Headley has emerged as one of the EBC’s most talented players; among her best accomplishments this year is her 38 flat single-season average that is currently leading the conference.
Bella Warner followed her by shooting a 45 - good for the second best score on the team. These two scores are very similar to what was seen at the Tri-County Tournament - being that Headley and Warner were the team’s leading scorers and the ones who pushed them the hardest towards victory.
Helping round out the rest of the team’s overall performance were Kaitlyn Englehart and Haley Hamilton, who shot a 46 and 49 respectively. The girls showed a prominent level of teamwork and unity during this match based off of their scores as a whole - and this resilience has proven to be their strong point during the entire course of their dominant season.
Though the girls golf team may fly under the radar amongst other MHS fall sports, their remarkable season will not go unnoticed. The team has 4 out of the top 5 averages in the EBC (Headley, Englehart, Warner, and Jayden Mitchell), along with a season in which the team faced virtually no challenges in defeating other teams in their conference. The girls hope to keep this success alive in entering the postseason, as this is the moment they’ve been waiting for all year.
