Creative Writing Club Travels to Cloverleaf
On Saturday, January 18th, the members of Creative Writing Club traveled to Cloverleaf High School to participate in a writing competition; they competed against a total of 14 schools from all over the region.
Members of the club include seniors Savanah Angel, Angel Borbajo, Christy Green, Rachel Ketler, and sophomore Erin Weimer. Although severe weather conditions had put a 2-hour delay on the competition, Marlington continued to have high hopes throughout the 3 rounds of writing.
University School from Chagrin Falls, Ohio received Overall Tournament Champion. 1st-3rd place for Division 1 was Holy Name High School, Gilmour Academy, and University School. 1st-3rd place for Division 2 was University School, Field High School, and Cloverleaf High School.
Thirty individual writers had been rewarded based on their scores and creative imagination from the prompts given to them. Two of Marlington’s writers had ranked for Division 2: Savanah Angel for 12th place, and Angel Borbajo for 4th place.
A Laureate Choice Award - Honoring the Power of Poetry, had been granted to six writers based on the poem prompt The Storm. Local authors had the opportunity to judge which poems they felt deserved merit, and awarded six writers personally. Congratulations to Paige Hojar, Sarah Voss, Max Outcalt, Rachel de Haan, Gwyneth Wilde, and Ashley Armstrong on their achievement.
Entertainment was brought into the competition when all writers watched a band called The Permanents perform in Cloverleaf’s gymnasium. Music allowed stress to ease itself from the writers, but also allowed self expression among the crowd.
With all of the results in, 50% will move on to the state tournament on Saturday, May 9th at the University of Findlay.
